minority owner
Junior equity holder
A minority owner holds less than half the ownership stake in a business, property, or asset—enough to have a financial interest but not enough to control decisions unilaterally.
The term appears frequently in sports, where wealthy individuals buy minority stakes in teams: She became a minority owner of the franchise in 2019.
Minority owners may have voting rights or input, but majority owners or managing partners typically call the shots.
