metric tonne

Thousand kilograms exactly

A metric tonne is a unit of mass equal to 1,000 kilograms, or approximately 2,205 pounds.

It's the standard unit for measuring large quantities in most of the world, used for commodities, cargo, and industrial materials: The ship carried 50,000 metric tonnes of grain.

The spelling "tonne" distinguishes it from the American short ton (2,000 pounds) and the British long ton (2,240 pounds).

Often shortened to just "tonne" or abbreviated as "t" or "MT."
