metric prefixes

Magnitude naming system

Metric prefixes are the syllables attached to base units to indicate multiples or fractions: kilo- for thousand, milli- for one-thousandth, mega- for million, micro- for one-millionth, and so on.

They allow compact expression of very large or small quantities: a kilogram, three millimeters, two terabytes.

The prefixes scale by powers of ten, making conversion straightforward.
