melaleuca

Peeling bark shrub

Melaleuca is a genus of trees and shrubs native to Australia, commonly called paperbarks or tea trees for their distinctive peeling bark and the tea-like infusions early settlers brewed from their leaves.

Tea tree oil, used medicinally and in cosmetics, comes from one species.

In Florida, melaleuca is an invasive pest that crowds out native vegetation in wetlands.
