A medical intern is a physician in the first year of postgraduate clinical training, having completed medical school but not yet licensed for independent practice.
Interns work under supervision in hospitals, rotating through specialties like surgery, pediatrics, and internal medicine.
The term is sometimes used interchangeably with first-year resident: She's doing her medical internship at Johns Hopkins.
