martyrization

Death for beliefs

Martyrization is the process of making someone into a martyr—either literally through persecution and death, or figuratively by casting them as a victim of unjust treatment.

The word often carries skepticism about whether the suffering is genuine or exaggerated: His martyrization of himself grew tiresome.

It can also describe how groups elevate fallen members to symbolic status: the martyrization of political dissidents.
