constitutional right
Guaranteed legal freedom
A constitutional right is a protection or freedom guaranteed by a nation's constitution, placing it beyond the reach of ordinary legislation.
In American usage, the term typically refers to rights enumerated in the Bill of Rights or established through subsequent amendments: freedom of speech is a constitutional right, the constitutional right to bear arms.
Constitutional rights can be limited but not easily abolished, requiring amendment rather than simple legislation to change.
