man friday

Loyal male assistant

A man friday is a loyal, versatile assistant—someone who handles whatever tasks need doing.

The term comes from Friday, the faithful companion Robinson Crusoe rescues and names in Defoe's 1719 novel.

He served as the CEO's man friday for twenty years.

The female equivalent is girl friday, though both terms now sound dated.
