A mallrat is someone, typically a teenager, who spends excessive time hanging out at shopping malls—socializing, wandering, and loitering rather than shopping with purpose.
The term peaked in the 1990s when malls served as primary gathering spots for suburban youth: We were total mallrats in high school, just killing time at the food court every weekend.
