Gratitude for fortune
Lucky stars are the celestial bodies supposedly responsible for one's good fortune.
The phrase appears almost exclusively in thank your lucky stars, expressing gratitude for an outcome that could easily have gone worse: Thank your lucky stars you weren't in the car when it crashed.
The expression reflects old beliefs that stars influenced human destiny.
