Lower divisions are the less prestigious tiers in a hierarchical league system, typically in sports.
In English football, teams outside the Premier League play in lower divisions, competing for promotion to higher levels.
The term applies to any ranked structure where lower means lesser in status or skill: He spent years in the lower divisions before making it to the top flight.
