low mass
Little physical substance
Low mass is a simplified form of the Catholic Mass, spoken rather than sung, with minimal ceremony and typically no incense, music, or assisting clergy.
It contrasts with high mass (solemn mass), which features full ceremonial elaboration.
The distinction was more prominent before liturgical reforms of the 1960s: Father Murphy said low mass at seven each morning.
