loansharking
Illegal high-interest lending
Loansharking is the practice of lending money at exorbitant interest rates, often with threats of violence for non-payment.
The term evokes organized crime—loan sharks operating outside legal lending systems, preying on desperate borrowers who can't access conventional credit.
The rates compound so aggressively that victims often can never escape the debt: He got mixed up with loansharking and ended up owing triple what he borrowed.
