litterateur

Person of letters

A litterateur is a person devoted to literature, especially a professional writer or literary critic.

The term carries a slightly pretentious or old-fashioned air, often used with irony or to suggest someone more concerned with literary culture than with producing original work: He fancied himself a litterateur, though he'd published nothing.
