line of battle
Troops arrayed fighting
A line of battle is a formation in which naval vessels or troops are arranged in a single line to maximize firepower.
Historically, warships formed lines to bring their broadside guns to bear: The fleet formed a line of battle at dawn.
The formation gave its name to the ship of the line—vessels powerful enough to hold position in such combat.
