light festivals
Illumination-centered public events
Light festivals are public celebrations centered on elaborate displays of illumination—lanterns, candles, fireworks, or electric installations.
Many have religious or cultural roots: Diwali in Hindu tradition, Hanukkah's menorah lighting, Chinese Lantern Festival, or Sweden's St.
Lucia Day.
Modern versions often emphasize spectacle: The city's annual light festival drew thousands to see the illuminated sculptures.
The displays typically mark seasonal transitions, especially the return of longer days after winter darkness.
