light-emitting diode

Glowing electronic chip

A light-emitting diode is a semiconductor device that produces light when electrical current passes through it.

Commonly called an LED, it uses far less energy than incandescent bulbs and lasts much longer.

LEDs appear in indicator lights, screens, traffic signals, and increasingly in general lighting: The city replaced its streetlights with LEDs.
