lexicographically

By alphabet sequence

Lexicographically describes an ordering system based on how words appear in a dictionary—alphabetically, letter by letter, from left to right.

In computing and mathematics, this extends beyond letters to any sequence of comparable elements: numbers, characters, or strings are sorted by comparing each position in turn until a difference is found.

The filenames were sorted lexicographically.

Lexicographically, "apple" comes before "application" because the fifth character differs.
