laying away

Saving for later

Laying away is setting something aside for future use or purchase.

A store lays away merchandise while a customer pays in installments: I'm laying away that coat until Christmas.

The phrase also means putting something in storage or safekeeping.

To lay someone away is to bury them—a euphemism for interment.
