lain
Had been resting
Lain is the past participle of lie, the verb meaning to recline or be situated.
It appears with helping verbs: She had lain there for hours, The book has lain unopened on my desk.
Lain is often confused with laid, the past participle of lay (to put something down), but lie takes no direct object while lay requires one.
