lay by

Set aside reserves

Lay by means to set something aside or store it for future use.

In rural and Southern American English, a lay-by is a wide spot on a road where vehicles can pull off, similar to what others call a turnout or rest area.

British English uses lay-by for the same roadside feature.

The phrase also appears in farming contexts, where laying by a crop means giving it final cultivation before harvest.

We decided to lay by some money for emergencies.
