law lord
Appellate court peer
A law lord was a member of the British House of Lords who held or had held high judicial office, entitled to sit and vote when the Lords acted as the highest court of appeal.
The term most commonly referred to Lords of Appeal in Ordinary, life peers appointed specifically to perform judicial functions.
This role ended in 2009 when the Supreme Court of the United Kingdom was established, taking over the judicial functions previously exercised by the law lords.
