lava caves
Molten rock passages
Lava caves are tunnels formed when molten lava flows beneath a hardened crust, then drains away, leaving hollow passages.
Also called lava tubes, they can extend for miles and preserve remarkably stable temperatures.
The Hawaiian islands have some of the world's longest lava caves.
Some have been proposed as potential shelters for lunar or Martian habitats.
