killed steel
Fully deoxidized alloy
Killed steel is steel that has been fully deoxidized during manufacturing, producing a dense, uniform metal free of gas pockets.
The term comes from the quiet, non-bubbling surface of the molten metal after deoxidizing agents like aluminum or silicon are added—the steel appears "dead" or "killed" compared to the roiling surface of untreated molten steel.
Killed steel is stronger and more consistent than semi-killed or rimmed steel, making it preferred for structural applications and high-quality products.
