kick-starting

Getting things going

Kick-starting is getting something going with an initial push of energy or effort.

The term comes from motorcycles, where a pedal is kicked down to start the engine.

Now it applies to any vigorous beginning: The government hopes tax cuts will kick-start the economy.

The hyphen distinguishes it from literally kicking while starting.
