key lights
Main subject lighting
Key lights are the primary light sources in photography, film, or video production—the main illumination that defines how a subject appears.
The key light establishes the overall exposure and creates the dominant shadows that give a scene its visual character.
The cinematographer positioned the key light at a 45-degree angle to the actor's face.
