jumping the broom
Matrimonial leap ceremony
Jumping the broom is a wedding tradition in which the couple jumps over a broomstick to seal their marriage.
The practice is associated with African American weddings, where it honors enslaved ancestors who were denied legal marriage ceremonies.
The phrase sometimes refers more broadly to getting married: They're jumping the broom next June.
