juddering

Shaking with jerks

Juddering describes a rapid, jerky shaking or vibrating motion, typically mechanical.

An engine judders when it runs roughly; a bus judders to a halt.

The word is more common in British than American English, where shuddering or vibrating might be preferred: The old elevator juddered between floors.

As a noun, a judder is an instance of such movement.
