interne
Hospital physician trainee
Interne is an older spelling of intern, referring to a medical graduate gaining supervised practical experience in a hospital.
The spelling with a final -e was standard in American medical contexts through the mid-twentieth century but has largely fallen out of use: The interne worked thirty-six-hour shifts.
