intercalates
Wedges into layers
Intercalates means inserts between existing elements.
In chemistry and biology, molecules intercalate when they slip between other molecules—a drug might intercalate into DNA strands.
In geology, rock layers intercalate when they alternate or interleave.
The calendar sense is oldest: to intercalate a day is to insert it to correct the calendar, as February 29th intercalates into leap years.
