indigenous elder
Native community leader
An indigenous elder is a senior member of an Aboriginal, Native American, or other First Nations community who holds cultural knowledge, traditional wisdom, and often ceremonial responsibilities.
Elders serve as teachers, advisors, and keepers of oral history.
The role involves more than age—it requires community recognition of one's wisdom and integrity: We consulted with indigenous elders before beginning the land acknowledgment.
