incomplete grade
Temporary academic placeholder
An incomplete grade is a temporary academic mark indicating a student hasn't finished required coursework, typically due to illness or emergency.
The student receives additional time to complete assignments, after which the incomplete converts to a regular letter grade: She took an incomplete in chemistry after her surgery.
If not resolved within the deadline, it usually becomes a failing grade.
