hydrosol

Plant steam condensate

A hydrosol is the water-based product of steam distillation, typically from aromatic plants.

When essential oils are extracted, the hydrosol captures water-soluble plant compounds that the oil does not.

Rose hydrosol and lavender hydrosol are used in skincare and aromatherapy: She spritzed her face with rose hydrosol.

Less concentrated than essential oils, hydrosols offer gentler applications.
