howlite

Porous calcium borosilicate

Howlite is a white mineral often streaked with gray or black veins, commonly used in jewelry and craft.

Because it readily absorbs dye, howlite is frequently colored to imitate turquoise or other semiprecious stones.

It's soft enough to carve and polish easily.

The mineral is named after Henry How, who discovered it in Nova Scotia in 1868.
