house slaves
Indoor enslaved servants
House slaves were enslaved people who worked in their enslaver's home rather than in fields—as cooks, maids, nursemaids, or personal servants.
Their proximity to the slaveholding family sometimes meant marginally better material conditions but also constant surveillance and vulnerability to sexual exploitation.
The term appears in historical contexts: The house slaves learned of the master's plans before the field hands did.
It persists as a slur suggesting someone has sold out to those in power, trading dignity for favor.
