hoop dance
Circular storytelling performance
Hoop dance is a form of Native American storytelling dance in which a performer manipulates multiple hoops to create shapes representing animals, symbols, and elements of nature.
The dancer weaves the hoops around the body in fluid movements, often using dozens at once: The hoop dance at the powwow drew a large crowd.
The practice has both ceremonial significance and contemporary competitive forms.
