honor cord
Academic achievement rope
An honor cord is a decorative rope worn over graduation robes, typically draped around the neck with tasseled ends hanging in front.
Different colors signify different achievements—academic honors, membership in honor societies, or completion of special programs.
Students who earn multiple distinctions may wear several cords at once: She graduated with three honor cords for Latin honors, Phi Beta Kappa, and community service.
