honkytonks

Rowdy music joints

Honkytonks are rough, cheap bars or nightclubs, especially those featuring country music and dancing.

The word evokes a particular American scene—neon signs, jukeboxes, sawdust floors, cold beer, and heartbreak songs: We spent Saturday night at a honkytonk outside Austin.

Honkytonk also describes the style of country music played in such places, characterized by twangy guitars and plaintive vocals.

Also spelled honky-tonks.
