Segregation-era founded institutions
Historically black describes institutions—especially colleges and universities—founded to serve Black Americans during segregation, when they were excluded from white institutions.
Howard University is a historically black college.
The designation persists even though these schools now admit students of all races, acknowledging their origins and continuing cultural significance to the Black community.
