hell money

Burned for ancestors

Hell money is paper currency burned as an offering in Chinese ancestral rituals, intended to provide wealth for the deceased in the afterlife.

The notes often feature large denominations and images of the Jade Emperor or Bank of Hell.

The practice stems from the belief that burnt offerings reach ancestors in the spirit realm: They burned hell money at the graveside during Qingming Festival.
