head gate
Water flow regulator
A head gate is a gate controlling water flow at the entrance of a canal, irrigation ditch, or similar waterway.
Opening or closing the head gate regulates how much water enters the channel downstream.
In ranching, a head gate is also a device that restrains cattle by clamping around the neck, holding the animal still for veterinary work or branding.
