gunports
Ship's weapon holes
Gunports are openings in the side of a ship through which cannons are fired.
These square or rectangular holes, fitted with hinged covers that could be closed against waves and weather, allowed warships to mount heavy guns on lower decks while maintaining seaworthiness.
The frigate opened her gunports and ran out the guns.
