gun jumping
Acting before signal
Gun jumping is acting before the proper starting signal, from the racing term for leaving the blocks before the starting pistol fires.
In securities law, it specifically refers to promoting or trading stock before a public offering is officially registered: The SEC investigated the company for gun jumping after executives gave interviews hyping the IPO.
More broadly, any premature action that violates proper sequence: Publishing the results before peer review was gun jumping.
