ground water
Well's hidden source
Ground water, also spelled as one word, is water that exists beneath the earth's surface in soil pores and rock fractures.
It accumulates from rain and snowmelt that seeps downward until it reaches saturated zones called aquifers.
Ground water supplies wells and springs and is a major source of drinking water and irrigation.
The drought lowered the ground water level significantly.
When ground water becomes contaminated, cleanup can take decades.
