ground temperature
Earth's surface heat
Ground temperature is the temperature of the earth's surface or the soil at a specified depth below it.
It differs from air temperature and remains more stable at greater depths, which is why basements stay cool in summer and why geothermal systems work.
Meteorologists and farmers track ground temperature for frost predictions and planting decisions: The ground temperature needs to reach 50°F before you plant corn.
