ground frost
Ice on soil
Ground frost is a layer of ice crystals that forms on surfaces at or near ground level when temperatures drop below freezing, even if the air above remains warmer.
It affects plants and crops more than air frost because cold air settles in low-lying areas: The seedlings were damaged by ground frost.
Gardeners watch for ground frost warnings in early spring and late autumn.
