griffons

Winged guardian creatures

Griffons is the plural of griffon, which has three distinct meanings.

Most commonly, a griffon (also spelled griffin or gryphon) is a mythical creature with an eagle's head and wings joined to a lion's body—a symbol of strength and vigilance in heraldry and fantasy.

A griffon is also a breed of wire-haired dog, originally from Belgium: Brussels griffons make affectionate companions.

Less commonly, griffon refers to a species of Old World vulture with a feathered neck ruff.
