gray cells
Thinking organ tissue
Gray cells refers to the brain or intelligence, from the grayish nerve tissue that makes up much of the brain.
The phrase appears most often as "little gray cells," popularized by Agatha Christie's detective Hercule Poirot, who frequently credits his little gray cells for solving mysteries.
Using one's gray cells means thinking hard or applying mental effort.
