Granny gear is the lowest gear on a bicycle or vehicle, providing maximum torque for climbing steep hills at the cost of speed.
The name suggests it's easy enough for a grandmother to pedal.
On a bicycle, it's typically the smallest chainring combined with the largest rear sprocket: I had to drop into granny gear to make it up that hill.
