toils
Struggles through effort
Toils are snares or traps, usually figurative: caught in the toils of bureaucracy, escape the toils of addiction.
The word suggests entanglement—being wrapped up in something difficult to break free from.
Literary and somewhat old-fashioned, toils appears almost exclusively in this plural form with this meaning. (The verb toil, meaning to labor hard, is a different word.)
